Tribes - Kikuyu

The kikuyu tribe also known as Gikuyu are mostly farmers, they depend greatly on the agriculture, They farm their land for crops, which consists of both subsistence and cash crops.

Other related tribes are Embu,Mbeere, and Meru.
Mostly, Kikyus are found in the central province of Kenya…but in the modern times, they are spread Throughout the country and out of the county .
Kikuyu Culture/Religion: Most Kikuyus have converted to Christianity, since the arrival of the first Scottish missionaries in Kenya in the 1900.

Their native Religion, they worshipped God or Ngai (The Great Provider) they believed that He lived on the top of the mountain. They offered scarifies of goats, once in a while, under the a specific tree called mugumo, they have different tradional dances for every occasion.

They believed their origin was from a man and a woman named Gikuyu and Mumbi respectively, they Were put on the earth by Ngai. Gikuyu and Mumbi had nine (9) daughters who married and hence origins of the tribe .

Traditionally kikuyu families were polygamous, with husband having more than one wife, so long as he can provide.They would give goats ,and traditional beer for dowry to the brides family.

The kikuyu's traditionally practice male circumcision, and in some cases girls …depending on ones religious back ground/belief.

Language: The kikuyu , is part of Bantu group of languages, this means that some words in kikuyu could mean the same in another tribe/language. NB The kikuyus also speak English the official language, and Swahili –national language.

Notable people in the kikuyu tribe: The current President of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki, the first president.
When Kenya got its independence from Britain Mzee Jomo Keyatta, and Prof. Wangari Maathai- first African woman to receive the –Nobel Peace Prize for development, Democracy and peace.
